Museum of Impossible Forms, Helsinki

How to situate our practices when working context-specific as an artist, architect or urban planner? How to take into account the needs and questions rising from the localities in urban planning, and when preserving and documenting our cultural environment? How does bias and norms affect urban planning, decision-making, and art curating in the suburbs?

Lähiölaboratorio is a collaboration between Museum of Impossible Forms and participatory urban planning bureau FEMMA Planning. The collaboration started in May 2021 in response to the need to situate our practices and critically reflect on the planning policies and their socio-political and cultural effects in the urban suburbs of East Helsinki.

Lähiölaboratotio offers a platform for translocal connections with the aim to foster dialogues, context-based learning and community building for practices such as urban planning, art, architecture, and for people around Kontula suburb and other similar neighborhoods in East Helsinki.

Lähiölaboratorio consists of different events, discussions, presentations and experiments.

The program will be updated during Spring 2022 on the Museum of Impossible Forms’ webpage and at https://femmaplanning.com/

 Society of Cinema

During 2021-2022 Society of Cinema concentrates on independent film production practices and feminist filmmaking strategies worldwide and in the local context. Aiming to strengthen the connections of the local scene with other filmmaking groups and film scholars internationally; our program engages with, analyses, discusses, and counteracts (yet to be renounced) effects of its structures. We are taking a practice-based, yet research- centric approach through workshops, creative programming and critical publications.

Society of Cinema series is curated by Danai Anagnostou in conversation with Giovanna Esposito Yussif.

An Entry to Iranian Music

An Entry to Iranian Music is an eight-session workshop as part of our Alternate Pedagogy program at Museum of Impossible Forms. Initiated in 2020 to further the curatorial focus of ‘The Atlas of Lost Beliefs (For Insurgents, Citizens and Untitled Bodies)’, M{if} invited Aman Askarizad to devise a series of lectures, workshops, and performances, jointly conducted by Farshad Sanati, Aman Askarizad and guest lecturers.

“This course provides nuanced and detailed introductions to several important fundamentals and advanced concepts of Iranian Music. Utilising engaging and interactive methods, the sessions provide holistic knowledge about the history, characteristics, scales and modes, rhythms and instruments of Iranian music. The project aims to dispel simplifications and generalisations by providing in-depth look into Iran’s music, its history, its symbiotic relationships with other forms of music in the region that have been otherwise categorized as ‘Oriental music’.”
