Ubuntu Film Club x PoC Open Mic: Love Jones + PoC Open Mic #11

Ubuntu Film Club x PoC Open Mic: Love Jones + PoC Open Mic #11

What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day, or Friendship Day as it is called in Finland, than by enjoying an evening of togetherness and community, brought to you by two of Helsinki's favourite events!

That's right.

Ubuntu Film Club and PoC Open Mic come together for the first time in Helsinki history to present a movie plus open mic extravanganza.

You do not want to miss this one!

We will kick things off by watching the captivating "Love Jones", directed by Theodore Witcher and starring Larenz Tate, Nia Long, Isaiah Washington, Bill Bellamy, and Lisa Nicole Carso.

Two artists; Darius (Larenz Tate), an aspiring writer, and Nina (Nia Long), an aspiring photographer, share an instant connection after meeting at a jazz club. The two bond over music, photography and poetry, and eventually begin a romance. However, when Nina decides to move to New York and mend her relationship with her ex-fiancé, Marvin (Khalil Kain), it leaves Darius heartbroken, and the couple's future is unsure.

We continue the evening with PoC Open Mic #11, where we especially encourage those who have not performed with us before to go on stage. All you need to do is turn up, tell us you want to recite poetry, sing a song or crack some jokes and the mic is yours.

Ubuntu Film club is a Helsinki based (almost) monthly film club, where we come together to watch quality cinema, discuss topics of common interest, and enjoy good company.

PoC Open Mic is an open mic event in Helsinki where persons of colour, members of groups racialised as non-white, and those from ethnic minorities get a chance to perform.

It is a contested Space and it represents a contact zone, a space of unlearning, formulating identity constructs, norm-critical consciousness and critical thinking. Impossible Forms are those that erase and facilitate the process of transgressing the boundaries/borders between art, politics, practice, theory, the artist and the spectator. For 2019-2020, Museum of Impossible Forms operates under the curatorial theme of ‘The Atlas of Lost Beliefs (For Insurgents, Citizens and Untitled Bodies)’.

Museum of Impossible Forms is a Safer Space. We follow a  Safer Space policy to create a welcoming, inclusive, awesome environment.

Events at the Museum of Impossible Forms are completely free and accessible without prior booking.
