M{IF} Society of Cinema Artist Talk : Silvana Bahia

The Museum of Impossible Forms (MiF) and ARMA Alliance invite you to the screening of the short film KBELA (Brazil, 2015, 22’) by Yasmin Thayná – a powerful ode to the hair of Afro-Brazilian women.

The screening will follow with a conversation with Lauttasaari Manor residency guest, Afro-Brazilian journalist, filmmaker, writer, and activist Silvana Bahia (Director at Olabi/Pretalab), who also worked on KBELA’s production team.

KBELA (2015) is an audiovisual experience made collaboratively by Black women about Black women. Written and directed by Yasmin Thayná, the film results from the process of collective reflection about how filmmaking and Black women’s relationship with their hair represent the search for new possibilities of narrating their own histories in different fields where machismo/sexism and racism are obstacles to be overcome. The construction of KBELA originated in interpersonal, affective networks and online interactions. Funding for the film came through a crowdfunding campaign. KBELA has been awarded Best Short Film of the African Diaspora at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA 2017). It has also been featured at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR 2017; 2019) and at Pan-African Film and Television Festival (FESPACO, Burkina Faso).
