Join us for the screening of Andalusia (2007)

"Andalusia (2007) is the second feature film of French-Senegalese director Alain Gomis. It tells the story of Yacine (Samir Guesmi), a young Parisian of Algerian origin living in a caravan and struggling to understand his place in 21st Century France. Yacine wades through the monotony of everyday life, working odd jobs to avoid being tied down, yet yearning for relationships that last. A kaleidoscope of elusive side characters enter and leave his life throughout the film, fellow immigrants and natives, fellow searchers, each adding to the overarching themes of physical and spiritual displacement. The film asks what happens to a soul without roots when, facing the disorder of everyday life in a foreign land."

– Christopher Thomas (Curator, Society of Cinema, Museum of Impossible Forms)

A thirtyish Frenchman of Algerian descent struggles to find himself and his place in contemporary France in 'Andalucia'. The second feature by French-Senegalese helmer Alain Gomis explores themes similar to those addressed in his debut, 'L’Afrance' — namely, loss of identity, sense of disenfranchisement, reactions to entrenched power and a quest for inner peace. Poetic, elliptical pic unfolds in short, sensuous stream-of-consciousness-like scenes that evoke an interior world of emotion and sensation.
